The Freedom Schools® program fosters an enhanced feeling of self-worth through a love of reading. Our focus on literacy, cultural heritage, parental involvement and social action give students a glimpse at what’s out there in the world. From right here in Charleston.
The Linda and Tony Bakker Career Center provides a place for our youth to explore their talents, hone their skills and develop the essential readiness abilities to get and keep a job. And then turn the idea of work into the pursuit of a career.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters program is the oldest and most effective youth mentoring program in the nation. It helps children become more confident in their academic performance, better prepared against negative influences and better equipped to have a positive relationship with their parent at home. So not only does Sam benefit from a mentor, so did his mother.
When a teenager’s basic needs aren’t met, they literally lose the ability to dream. Programs like the Beacon, a shelter for runaway and homeless teens, give children the chance to stop worrying about making it through the day. And start thinking about how they want to live their life tomorrow.
Ledford House is a low management group home for teens who have not been placed with a family or who are in transition from a more structured program. We work with them to set and achieve personal and professional goals that lead to either a successful family reunification or independent living. And we teach them that respect is the most important thing you can give to others – and yourself.
