Today, Carolina Youth Development Center provides programs reaching over 600 children and youth locally each year. We care for young people with very serious problems, including physical and sexual abuse, neglect, abandonment, and severe emotional disorders.

    The Beacon, a shelter program offered through Carolina Youth Development Center, is designed to serve runaway and homeless youth under 18 years of age.   • Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS)
    Big Brothers Big Sisters is a nationally acclaimed program matching hundreds of children from single-parent families to caring adult role models. Volunteers spend an average of nine hours each month with their Little Brother or Sister. The program also welcomes couples or groups wishing to volunteer. Together, these matches share quality recreational time, and many form life-long friendships. read more...
  • Callen-Lacey Center for Children
    Callen-Lacey Center for Children is the only children's emergency shelter in Berkeley County. Callen-Lacey is open, every day throughout the year, providing shelter and treatment to local children, removed from their homes because of abuse and neglect. Carolina Youth Development Center manages two emergency shelters in the tri-county area, serving more than two hundred children annually. read more...
  • Charleston Emergency Shelter
    When a child is removed from home because of documented abuse and neglect, he or she often has nowhere to go. The Charleston Emergency Shelter provides an immediate safe haven and treatment for children suffering from the impact of physical, sexual and emotional abuse, until they are placed with a responsible foster care family, go to live with a stable relative, or move to a more permanent group setting. read more...
  • Freedom Schools
    Freedom Schools, an innovative program with documented outcomes is built upon the twin prongs of inspiring a love for reading and fostering an enhanced feeling of self-worth among participants. Summer programming includes not only intensive reading-related activities, but also sports and team-building exercises, arts and crafts, and field trips. College-age interns, trained by the Children's Defense Fund at a national training seminar in Knoxville, TN, lead all sessions. read more...
