As part of its Runaway and Homeless Youth program, Carolina Youth DevelopmentSafe Place Logo Center (CYDC) has established the Charleston area's first Safe Place Program. A national program partnering with local organizations, Safe Place sites offer immediate help and safety for youth in crisis. Charleston currently has 37 Safe Place Sites, ranging from Seacoast church in West Ashley and CCSD school guidance counselors' offices to Cici's Pizza, Cricket Communications, and CSX-I.

What is it like to be a homeless teen? Watch this compelling video.

Each year an estimated two million youth runaway from home due to abuse or neglect or because their parents no longer want them. Pregnant, scared and alone, Jasmine* a sixteen year-old runaway, was admitted to The Beacon, CYDC's shelter for homeless and runaway youth. Jasmine had a past history of being sexually abused and was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. Through intense family counseling at CYDC, Jasmine and her mother were able to rebuild a trusting relationship. Jasmine has gone from nearly failing out of school to becoming an outstanding student and receiving her teacher's recommendation to take the PSAT. She is also active on her school's step team and has a clear vision for her future.
