Child Abuse in the Lowcountry
Childhood physical, sexual and emotional abuse is a silent epidemic in our community. Providing the only emergency residential services for these children in the Tri-county area, our shelters remain filled to capacity much of the time, servings hundreds of children each year.
According to the local Department of Social Services, there are more than 5,000 reported cases of abuse and neglect in the Tri-county area every year.
In the five counties surrounding the Center, the Department of Social Services substantiates abuse in cases involving more than 1,500 children each year.
That's an average of 3-5 children each day, involved in documented cases of abuse. In addition, a great number of cases remain unreported, and many reported cases lack sufficient evidence to pursue.
